After School Reading Clubs
Reading is an essential element of any child’s education, it is key to increasing vocabulary and improving writing skills. T2T believes that every child should have access to books to help them learn, grow and develop a love of reading. Working in partnership with BookAid International, T2T’s Community Volunteer Teachers have set up after school reading clubs to encourage their students to practice and enjoy reading outside of class.
A huge thank you to our partners, BookAid International who have donated over 8,500 books to support our CVTs and their students.
Promoting a reading culture through after school clubs
Before the CVT programme there were no extra curricular activities or reading materials for school children in the areas where we work. The books donated by BookAid International are an invaluable resource in T2T’s attempts to promote the value of reading in the schools and communities in which our CVTs work.
Since T2T received the books, CVTs have created after school reading clubs at their schools, which take place three times a week. These groups help their students to develop their reading skills and promote reading as a fun activity to do outside of school time. Students have also been encouraged to form social reading groups, an innovation which encourages them to take ownership of their reading outside of the classroom.
“The books have improved our pupils’ performance in reading and simple story telling. Reading in my school would not have been improved without the books.”
Bayuo Banaso Julious, CVT
Learning to read
After school reading clubs give students additional support in the process of learning to read and improving reading skills. This additional support with this crucial skill subsequently improves their whole educational experience. The after school clubs have had a huge impact, CVTs’ students are more engaged in reading and get more out of class work.
The after-school reading clubs provide the opportunity for all students to practice and improve their reading skills in an inclusive environment. Children in the schools where T2T operates now have access to one or two story books to read at their own pace.
Getting the most out of books
T2T’s training manual teaches students to read using an eight-step approach. This approach is designed to help all students to develop their reading skills, regardless of their ability. This approach includes developing students’ memory skills, phonetic capabilities and letter sound identification, all of which directly impacts writing and listening skills.
We train our CVTs on how to get the most out of books and promote the habit of reading to their students. CVTs have been able to create libraries within their schools from the books that have been donated. These valuable in-school resources significantly increase students’ exposure to books and promote a culture of reading.
“The books assist us in comprehension exercises. They have made it easier to make reading and pronunciation more simple.”
Iddrisu Mohammed Baba, Assistant Head Teacher
'“Reading and literacy skills have improved, which wouldn’t have been possible without the books.”
